It’s official BHS has ceased trading. After many discussions with potential buyers and an offer by former Mothercare boss was rejected, this once great bastion of the High Street will close its doors.
This means that 163 stores will close and 11,000 staff will lose their jobs. 8,000 of which are permanent staff and 3,000 who are not directly employed.
BHS has been on the high street since 1928. Over those 88 years it grew from one store in Brixton to 163 stores nationwide.
As the parliamentary enquiry continues to understand why the taxpayer is left to shoulder the burden of the whole in it’s pension scheme, I guess this will not be the last we hear of BHS.
